Editing and publishing silenced and under-represented voices

28 September 2021 | #IPEdConf21, October 2021 by Thirangie Jayatilake Presentation by Jodie Lea Martire at the IPEd conference.  Jodie presented the results based on her research involving Spinifex Press and Wild Dingo Press, and multiple authors they have published. She explained that she uses the phrase “writers of difference”, as the term “marginalised writers” emphasises the marginalisation and de-emphasises the writer. The presentation answered the question, “What do writers of difference want from Australian publishing?” 1. Know them (or respect them as they are)  Writers ask for interest in a literature that is plural and growing. “Please do not make all your writers sound like you, or…

From Editors Victoria Editors Victoria’s event on “Diversity in the Australian publishing industry and how can we support under-represented editors” with Dr Radhiah Chowdhury and Susannah Bowen took place on 19 November. November 2024 Editors Victoria

President’s report by Margaret Trudgeon AE The year is fast coming to a close, and the Editors Victoria committee has been working hard over the past month to get some PD workshops and events underway, while planning for new ones to come. We have just completed running Linda Nix’s “Grammar refresher” workshop, which ran over three sessions and proved very popular. I was fortunate to help out in the first session and it provided a great introduction to the world of grammar. On 14 November, Hilary Cadman’s popular workshop on “Editing tools to boost your productivity” will be held online, where she…

Emerging Writers’ Festival

I’m glad that I was able to contribute in some way to the Emerging Writers’ Festival by joining one of the Focus Groups back in May this year. The Focus Group was an oportunity for literary festival enthusiasts outside of the main program coordinators to share their feedback on the festival program. The festival is now underway with the National Writers Conference happening this weekend. Check out the conference progam here:- https://emergingwritersfestival.org.au/event/national-writers-conference/
